Each student is an individual and has specific gifts. Some students manage the academic programs with ease and so require a different approach to learning.
Warrnambool College is accredited by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to offer a Select Entry Accelerated Learning Program (SEALP) for students with exceptional academic ability.
The SEALP program is not an extension program - it is a highly academic course which asks the students to work academically above their year level while remaining in a social peer group for other school activities. These students are often found in the Band, Sport, Duke of Edinburgh and Public Speaking programs. As well, they are highly represented in leadership.
The Accelerated Learning Program allows students to progress through their secondary education in either five or six years by providing challenging learning experiences that are more tailored to the needs of the talented learner. There is greater emphasis on higher order thinking and learning skills and independent learning and research. Enrichment is provided by broadening content, understanding, experience and skills to a level appropriate to the students' stages of development.
Those students who are accepted into the program will be grouped together in one form when entering Year 7 and will remain with that group until the end of Year 10; this period of study will be completed in three years.
Students maintain and develop social relationships with a broad range of peers through a wide range of co-curricular activities offered by the College.
The selection process for entering into the SEALP program is in four parts :
1. Completion of an application form which is available from the College. A fee of $30.00 is required with the application to help offset the cost of tests.
2. Reference forms to be completed by the Grade 5 or 6 teacher and/or parent/guardian
3. Students complete three tests in the areas of humanities, mathematics and science. These tests are independently set and assessed by the Australian Council for Educational Research and each takes 40 minutes
4. Students whose test results and reference reports indicate their suitability for the program will be asked to attend an interview to complete the selection process.
Tests are held each year in early June.
